Dear Gogol Bordello,

First of all, thank you so much for your reply and for your genuine concern regarding this situation.

I feel that it is important to submit to you more information about the Campo Pequeno Bullring, where your concert is scheduled to take place.

It is Lisbon’s only bullring and Portugal’s most important one. Since it was first built, in 1892, until 2001, when it closed for works, countless thousands of bulls were maimed and terrorised there, only to be killed a few days after each bullfight in slaughterhouses. From May 2006 (since it has reopened after having been on works for many years) up until now, hundreds of bulls have been severely tortured there. This year alone, since the end of April until the present day, many dozens of bulls have been viciously tortured there in extremely cruel spectacles which are supposed to be amusing only as spectacles in which the performance of the bullfighters, the so-called artists of bullfighting, do nothing but stabbing bulls again and again until they are agonising in pain, despair, panic and confusion.

The Campo Pequeno Bullring is explored by a bullfighting company which derives profits from all the side-activities of the bullring – of the cafés, restaurants, shops, cinemas, parking lot and of the very use of the bullring for concerts and spectacles such as the one you have planned to take place there. The proceedings of all these activities go entirely to this bullfighting company, which is the only entity deciding how and for what to use the building – not the authorities. And, obviously, this bullfighting company will never drop its plans to maintain the bullfighting activity there, for as long as they are allowed to go on organising bullfights in the country. So, aside from all other initiatives that are undertaken to end bullfighting in Portugal and put a definitive end to this evil business at this place, one of the most important steps that can be made is to actually boycott the Campo Pequeno Bullring and all its facilities and commerce, as a way to put economic pressure over the company exploring the place, to eventually get it to end bullfighting activities there in order to prevent financial collapse caused by this boycott. Having all this in consideration, compassionate people – regardless of how passionate fans of Gogol Bordello they can be – will necessarily boycott Campo Pequeno, and will consequently boycott your concert there, if it will indeed take place there.

Having said this, we urge you to:

(1) please try your best to find another venue in Lisbon or perhaps near Lisbon, in the immediate surrounding towns next to Lisbon, such as Oeiras or Cascais, or possibly in the second most important city of Portugal, Porto, which is also a beautiful city, surely with many Gogol Bordello fans and with many and excellent venues where you can have a wonderful concert;

(2) in case you decide to go on and perform at Campo Pequeno if you do not find an alternative venue, please tell the Campo Pequeno administration about your disgust regarding bullfighting and about how much you would like to see the Campo Pequeno Bullring totally and permanently terminating its bullfighting activity, and please consider making a public statement against bullfighting when you are in Portugal, both when talking to the media and also when playing at your concert, showing your support to the majority of the Portuguese people who wants bullfighting banned in Portugal.

We hope that you may consider these important requests and that you may take action accordingly.

Looking forward for your reply and thanking you again for your attention,

Yours, sincerely,
